Housed in Saint-Tropez's former police station, made famous by the Louis de Funès Gendarme films, this museum tells two connected stories: the real village gendarmerie and the cinema that shaped Saint-Tropez's international image. Archive material, reconstructed sets, costumes and film history make it an accessible cultural stop in the town centre, especially on a day when the beach is not the main plan.

The building housed the Saint-Tropez brigade from 1879 to 2003. Its appearance in the Gendarme film series, beginning in 1964 with Louis de Funès, made it a popular-culture landmark. The museum is more than a set of film memorabilia: it also tells the history of local policing and the way screen stories reshaped the town's reputation. Look for reconstructed offices and historical documents connecting the real brigade with its fictional counterpart.

What will you see inside?
Exhibits include cinematic objects, reconstructed spaces and material relating to productions filmed on the Saint-Tropez peninsula. The displays range from the Gendarme films to the Route Nationale 7 holiday mythology and the wider history of the Riviera on screen. Brigitte Bardot and Romy Schneider also feature in the narrative. Temporary exhibitions vary, so check the current programme if one aspect of cinema particularly interests you.

BEYOND THE FIRST LOOK
Location and a simple town-centre itinerary
Find the museum at 2 place Blanqui in central Saint-Tropez. It fits easily into a walk around the harbour, the old town and Place des Lices once you have arranged parking. For October the official listing gives daily opening from 10am to 6pm. Allow enough time to explore the galleries rather than treating the visit as a quick photograph outside the famous building.
