VILLAGES & PLACES · LE GOLFE
The Secret
THE GOLFE, ON THE MAURES SIDE.
A village in the valley, a church and the wooded Maures landscape. La Môle offers another way into the Golfe: more hills and nature, with the coast reached by car.
LE GOLFE VIEW
“Change the scenery without looking for another harbour.”
Begin in the village around Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church. The Verne landscape and Maures trails extend this discovery of the inland countryside.
A DAY HERE
01 · IN THE VILLAGE
Get your bearings in the centre and discover the façade of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine.
02 · IN NATURE
Discover the reservoir and wooded hills. This guide presents the lake as scenery rather than a beach.
03 · ON FOOT
Prepare a walk to Sainte-Magdeleine chapel, checking the route, weather and forest access.
The council describes a 2.5 km approach on foot along a dirt track from the water-treatment plant area. Allow for the return too: this describes access to the dam, rather than a full circuit of the lake. Check access conditions before setting out.
The village church dates from 1872; Sainte-Magdeleine chapel stands in the hills. The château is a private estate with no visits. Start with the centre, then plan your hill walk as a separate outing.
THE USEFUL DISTINCTION
Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church and Sainte-Magdeleine chapel are two different places. The chapel belongs to a walking excursion, rather than a quick stop in the village centre.
